It’s definitely good to personally feel compassion for families, but from a legal standpoint there are a lot of good reasons why it’s called the “justice system” and not the “vengeance system.”

It’s not that we “care” - it’s about adhering to our Constitution, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. It’s not a good idea to set the precedent that criminals deserve an “eye for an eye” type of punishment. That kind of justice is usually a hallmark of authoritarian regimes.
