I spend a lot of time in WV, and this is the state in a nutshell. It doesn’t matter if you’re competent or qualified, as long as you’re local. It’s the most insular place I’ve ever lived, and also the most backwards. People seem to delight in voting against their own interest. I hate it here.

And honestly, this is where I kind of blame the unions. They should have been working on retraining, education etc. for their members because, as you said, it has been clear for decades what is happening in manufacturing.

I get the anger from rural and middle America, I really do. I understand why people are frustrated with the Democrats, I get why people are fed up with aspects identity politics and I get why people have grown to hate anything that resembles the establishment.
