Reversing and then trying to repair your own car on the trackside? That’s not ideal from a safety perspective.
Other people continue to cross the Sahara after the Dakar went to South America. Including me. There are risks, of course; but if you can’t stomach any risk then overland travel generally, and rallies in particular, are not for you. The worst I had to face was a few officials taking bribes.

This already happens a lot. Carmakers get engines from big joint ventures or from existing, specialist engine manufacturers. It’s just less visible to the public because they focus on the brand that is carefully honed by the carmaker.
