The thing was, the Pinto was actually no worse at catching fire than most other cars of it’s class statistically, and better than some. Ford just got caught out doing the math - IIRC some internal memos were leaked.

I think the Pinto Memo largely got the math right. It’s famous because it said the quiet part out loud.
