no saves mid battle and yeah they can be. Each fight has a time limit and if you aren't the greatest at the game it can take that long. I had issues with water bosses and would frequently top out the timer fighting them.

here here! Hours and hours of grinding to get your ass kicked in 45 minute battles forcing you to grind all over again are quite annoying.
