Dear god, thank you for this. I live in the supposed Carnage Capital, Chicago. I work in the areas hardest hit by violence. I don’t carry a weapon. I rarely feel unsafe. I certainly feel safer than some of the people who live in my suburban IN hometown who freak out at the very mention of Chicago.

It’s a conservative thing. It’s part of their identity, to be constantly under some kind of attack...

It’s partially performative fear. They feel like their racism isn’t so bad if they can claim it’s all because they’re terrified.
