Two quick things:

You can get 300 miles out of a pair of shoes. MAYBE you can stretch that to 500, but that’s pushing it a lot. Even at as little as 10 miles a week, they won’t last a few years

Quick correction—I flew United Basic Economy the weekend before Thanksgiving. The deal wasn’t that it was $25 for a carry-on. The deal was that there were no carry-ons period. There was a warning at some point that if you showed up at the gate with a carry-on, they’d gate-check it and charge you extra for it
