The argument “if we ban guns, people will just make them themselves” is not very strong.

The vast majority of “gun murders” in the US are from turf wars fueled by the war on drugs. That category of people will get guns, either imported with their drugs or made by the local biker gang. I’d be surprised if the US homicide rate (raw or by firearms) changed all that much even under a full gun ban.
