I want Spotify and all digital music to do better. It is appalling how hard it is now for a musician or band to make a living in music, especially without touring or merch sales.

“It was also incredibly easy to explore all the music you wanted to if you lived any where near a large city or college town.”

Lodge 49 featured one.

Wow you have some issues to work out, friend.

It’s MikeD, he likes his hot takes like these.

Say what you will about this adaptation, but I thought it was particularly brave of them to make it a musical.

Are you fucking kidding me? No nomination for Rhea Seehorn (AGAIN!)?

Great stuff as usual, Tom. A couple other things that I think worked in this movie’s favor: (i) Home Alone was the ONLY Christmas movie and, really, one of the only kid movies released in Nov/Dec 1990; and (ii) it’s direct competition was ... just kinda weird. We are talking Rocky V, Predator 2, Dances with Wolves, Chi

Steve Martin also has a nice bit about Reiner in his memoir. After a contentious relationship with his father early on, he credits Carl Reiner and his role as a friend and mentor for helping to form his identity, saying “he taught me more about how to be a social person than any other adult in my life”.

Personally I think Ms Frizzle is insane in a way that works in a cartoon but will be deeply unsettling in live action.

In fairness, I think he’s trying to atone retroactively for that.

Oh for sure. That whole documentary needs to be remade or seriously edited with all Foote’s Confederacy fetishism. Hell, in the 1990s, Shelby said that he would have fought for the confederacy if he could. To give that abject racism such a prominent voice in one of the touchstone documentaries devalues the whole

I always kinda thought that the best thing about the Sam and Diane relationship was that the show made really clear that while they were attracted to each other they were a couple that DID NOT WORK. And the show screamed that in capital letters. That was how it kept the show going even after they decided to be a

“As in Double Indemnity, Wilder casts Fred MacMurray against his wholesome leading-man type, channeling his confident charisma into a morally repugnant character.”

If anyone hasn’t seen The Sweet Hereafter yet, just go do it. Ian Holm & Sarah Polley both absolutely crush their roles and the movie is just haunting and beautiful and depressing.

Do you get bored complaining about them saying it?

Caroline, this column has uniformly been well-written, but this one in particular was PHENOMENAL. Might be watching this tonight
