It seems to me the ultimate villain here is Disney for not locking every director and producer in a box before the script was even written and forcing them to come up with a strong outline for all three.

I think the biggest twist of the knife is having them finally cross paths again and she has clearly, unrevokably moved on. She’s not even mad at him.
All of these details about the decision making behind the scenes are tremendous. I especially liked the line “the danger is that you have a big idea and then you throw the characters out the window, because you want your cookie” because I think that’s the thing that has ruined a lot of serial dramas.
I think the best explanation for her being out of the picture in Breaking Bad is she and Saul just end it. I think they respect the actors and characters enough to know that the biggest and best challenge is to generate the breakup from emotional reasons rather than plot mechanics.
I get the sense from reading about the implementation that there were a million committee meetings and memos written in triplicate in carbon paper and embarassing ten minute film strips that were shown between shorts on VD prevention and proper foit care.
