None of the main characters really resembled their comic counter-parts at all. I haven’t seen the new one, but I understand that, like the Del Toro movies, it made Hellboy a manchild. Why? How does this worldly and independent guy with a been-there-done-that attitude become a permanently grounded teen with a crush? Is

I think owning a gun is generally not a good thing, and that gun control should be much stricter. But I also do not want private gun ownership to be as demographically concentrated as it is, among conservative white men. It will quicken the rise of tyranny.

I think leaving it up and clearly labeling it false/doctored is the better choice—not because it “allows people to choose what to believe” (which is an absolutely idiotic defense, because they should not seek to enable false belief)—but because it is overall more informative. People should see examples of doctored

We do let doctors decline to perform other medical procedures for a variety of reasons.

I’m pro-choice. But I do see some reason why the government—democratically elected government, at least—should have some say. I don’t believe in a soul but I also don’t believe that a person becomes a person at birth. A baby is biologically identical immediately before and after birth. I can’t see how some personhood

Yeah unfortunately nuance is lost on everyone—the majority of voters for whom being anti-abortion is a significant issue, and everyone making the same old “pro-life aren’t pro-life about xyz.” The abortion debate is largely a manufactured wedge issue, driven by anti-sex sentiment and a failure of imagination (i.e., I

Philadelphia, PA. And yeah I know about Alamo and occasionally google “alamo drafthouse philly” on the hope that one will pop up.

Now playing

Yeah no people have different unwritten rules now about how they’re not really bothering anyone when they are. And when I was younger theaters had an on-screen announcement to not talk or text.

none in philly

yeah really wish we had one of those in philadelphia. I’m really frustrated, and it’s so bad that were I to speak up, I’d have to talk to half a dozen people.

Actually theaters are shit now and everyone has their phones out and they all act like fucking animals. Took 30 minutes for the audience to settle when I saw Endgame. People were still walking in, whispering, and even after they quieted down, 4 people in my immediate vicinity kept taking their phones out for the rest

I disagree that the court should lead society, because I value democracy. I’ve certainly been happy when, at times, they have led—like the Court’s decision in Obergefell, granting a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. But make no mistake, it was indeed the court granting that right, not the law, not the

I can see how response might read as a rebuttal of some kind, but it wasn’t. I was just adding more context to my original comment. Victim-race disparity in sentences and defendant-race disparity in prosecutions both reveal devaluing of black lives and both offer good reasons to end the death penalty. Supreme Court

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that because of the white/black victim disparity, a white person was actually more likely to be put to death for murder, because most murders are intraracial. Still, prosecutors sought the death penalty against black defendants far more often than they did for white defendants.

Relatedly: The murderer of a white victim is far more likely to be sentenced to death than one who murders a black victim.

Murder has to be pre-meditated

“Deliberately try to provoke them into an argument” and “they ask you to leave” is doing a lot of the work here. I’m not going to say her free speech rights were infringed (private law school, private actors, after all) but “they ask you to leave” was actually them calling this seemingly non-fascist person a fascist,

Wow, what a graphic.
