I'm not saying there's a one to one relationship between being the kind of person to steal a baby and, I don't know, being the kind of person to raise a baby in a dungeon. But if you're selfish enough to steal someone else's child for whatever reason, I think that's enough to say that you're too selfish to parent in a

*sigh* It's not just about her hair.

Perhaps Amal has a picture of Kim on her wall to inspire her to be a strong woman, ala Beyonce.

The problem isn't the Oscars; the problem is the film-making industry. Minority actors aren't nominated because very few movies about minority characters are made. Women directors/cinematographers/sound editors aren't nominated because very few studios hire women in those roles. Expecting the Oscars to embrace

most of the comments weren't even about what patricia arquette said, it was about the white women here acting like woc on jez were ruining feminism by pointing out what was wrong in her speech

There are no "two sides," there is no street. Even ignoring her inability to grasp that there are women who are queer and women who are of color, the idea that "women" have been helping "the rest of us" and that we "owe" her is, first of all, hilariously narcissistic, but more importantly it's a common theme held

"We have to support each other.."

Those gay, black women definitely have all the luck.

I will never get this argument/line of thinking. If you can't call your friends/allies out on their behavior (as many are doing with Arquette) then you've got no right calling your enemies out. None at all.

Some of them don't but that's beside the point. Had Patricia said "men need to be more supportive of women's equality" and left it at that, her speech would have been fine.

Let's save the outrage for someone who deserves it.

You sound ignorant. People aren't criticizing her because she used a past tense on one word. She said that gay people and people of color need to fight for women like they have been fighting for us. Women and gay people/people of color are not mutually exclusive, so to say that other people need to fight for women is

i really really hope she does own up to it

Thank you, this is so well-articulated. It bothers me because it makes it clear that however well-intentioned she is, when she says or hears the word "women," she is thinking of a very specific kind of woman.

I commented somewhere else that there was no way to read her statement and not think it's horrible. And now I've seen all the comments from people defending her and the "maybe she didn't express herself as well as she should have, but" comments. WHAT. It's not particularly difficult to not tell oppressed/marginalized

like i honestly see their point, but what happened was a real peek of the deeply ingrained view that what america has: a Woman is white, heterosexual and cisgendered. That is the kneejerk, no thought, chiseled in stone idea that society has taught them. it shows that white america, and in this instance, white women,

"But that's not what she meaaaaaaaaaaant!"

*White Feminists only refers to feminists who follow their special snowflake brand of white feminism

"It's OK everyone - she's talking about equal wages, who cares that it's condescending and marginalizing, it's all for the greater good. Everything is not about race!" - all the enraged White Feminists when Clover posted about this.

Sorry the subtext of what she was saying marginalized gay women and WOC. It wasn't intentional but highlights the general problem of some women casually being excluded from public discourse.
