No, Do the Right Thing was released in 1989 and was eligible for the 1990 Academy Awards, which was dominated by Driving Miss Daisy... which is actually a lot worse in retrospect.

There were covers of Jenkins and Chazelle on a lot of magazines, definitely visually selling the idea that they were co-winners or something. The win never gets talked about without La La Land getting talked about too. The mix up really continues to dominate what the Moonlight win means.
Although it was an enjoyable moment, I do feel for Barry Jenkins. Moonlight winning (without interruption) should have been a defining moment at the Oscars, now its been reduced to a punchline. I still love that movie and I’m sad its win didn’t have a major effect on the Hollywood awards process.
Me pretty sure some people were determined to hate this show from moment they saw production stills, and not let actual show get in way of their opinion.
Lorca Prime?
Okay, so...this was not the best episode. A little too neat and tidy, and the action (once again) seems to be over as soon as it began. And a little hollow. I know wrapping up a story like this is challenging, but they seem to forget they can make the episodes longer. It can be 55 minutes long. No one will complain.
But…
That confused me, too. Even the blocking of it was odd, with her standing center floor ground level with her back to a room full of Starfleet, towards the crew of the Discovery who are standing on a riser with their backs to the Council. Like, I get this either being a speech to the Council, or her turning around and…
It’s fucking Star Trek. It’s the poster child for SJW shows. The whole franchise has been making social and political statements from the very beginning when they decided to have a multi-cultural cast and deal with issues like the Vietnam War, racism, the Cold War, etc.
I know it’s hard to review a Star Trek show without being influenced by the franchise’s long history. But we also tend to focus on the best episodes of previous Treks. For good reason, the best episodes are the most memorable. But fans have to stop acting like every other episode of Trek was a “Balance of Terror” or…
Conservatives demanding representation quotas for shows is so fucking funny. “I need more straight white males!!!”
That last speech was presented super weirdly.
Maybe we’ll have a few eps with Spock (Quinto) as Cap. That’d be cool. Some drama between him, Burnham and Sarek. It is a science ship.
No one cares, “dude”.
UGH this brings back memories of when my dad died 3 years ago. I had an old best friend from high school who became an extremely toxic part of my life, and this resulted in me basically ghosting her (which is shitty but I didn’t know how else to extract myself - this is after I had told her my feelings several times,…
Eh, I totally lost my shit after my mom died. People handle grief differently and I think that is one thing no one should be judged on.
I understand that the advent of social media has changed our social mores, but there is still etiquette to follow after the death of someone you know or know through others. It is absolutely not the time to make public conciliatory gestures like Parker’s because you are making it about YOU. If you want to extend an…
You don’t need to see the other two to follow the (nonsensical) plot, but they are a must if you want to feel underwhelmed.
Zack’s approach is pretty much the one I’ve adopted for this series, full time: just enjoy the ride. I have pretty much zero faith the writers will come up with a satisfying finale from all of this without some serious shenanigans, but I am still enjoying the hell out of Star Trek at max camp levels. Captain Evil…
Doesn’t it seem like the writing is often the weak link on these streaming shows? They’ll invest whatever in creators, actors, effects and promotion but the scripts often seem rushed and needed several more passes. Moreso for drama than comedy, but that’s where tight scripting really matters.
