As a “Liberal” I would say that what we like best about The Simpsons is its portrayal of Homer as the typical white, working-class idiot (or as “Stuff White People Like” calls this stereotype, “the WRONG kind of white people”).

They are not quite synonyms. “Insult” is what the creators of The Simpsons did and this verb puts the onus on them, describing something BAD that they did. “Being offended” is what Kondabolu did and using this verb puts the onus on him; he has CHOSEN to feel something and he could have easily made a different choice.
