Did you even try the consumer preview? A lot of the icons end up pulling content from their applications that becomes the icon, others even run a slideshow of that content on the icon. Plenty of the applications that I have tried in Windows 8 start out with their own custom icons, which look better than what I've seen…

I think the point was that charging is the only function that requires a physical connection (induction mods not withstanding). Data transfer, audio/video playback, etc. all have wireless options.

That will work fine for cables, but think about the stress it'll put on a dock; you'll need some bigger monstrosity to maintain that kind of stability when the dock connector is the only thing holding the device up.

And it also had an internal power pinout change between the firewire / USB and USB only models. I had to adapt devices that charged my iPod video when I got an iPod touch:
