In the years that I 0wned an Outback, there was one time the AWD came in handy: I was driving up the hill to a ski area. The roads had chain controls on (except for AWD/4WD vehicles). My Outback, with its all-season tires (and no chains) made it up the hill far better than any 2WD car on all-seasons would have done.
