Keep in mind that size=status to some degree among Gems. Rose appeared to taller than Jasper and the Amethysts, so there's some kind of ranking involved, though the nature of it is only conjecture at this point. That said, I do like the "flavors" of soldiers idea.

That's a neat idea: Rose Quartzes as a kind of Philosopher Warrior, a samurai or sorts. My own theory is that they are field commanders, while Jasper's and Amethysts are the front line troops, with Rubies acting as auxiliaries and bodyguards. But I like your spin.
