Agreed. It's not for nothing that I've considered Rush my favorite band since I was 16. I'm especially glad how in the last decade they finally got a measure of respect from wider culture. I used to take so much heat for being into Rush in high school (back in the 90's) but nowadays the people have finally caught on.

"But as in the similarly compromised Dark Shadows, the old-school-Burton pleasures of Miss Peregrine’s are eventually subsumed by the demands of franchise-building, including a superhero melee climax and a cop-out conclusion that refuses to hold Jake to the Sophie’s choice he’s forced to make."

The Germans conducted bombing campaigns on England into 1944.

On the other hand, "That is a thing I did… with that woman," never goes out of style.

For me it's "Thanks, Boston! You guys rock!" and "Those guys know how to rock." Given that I listen to Boston, they get some regular use.

Lynch's Dune is a movie I understand is flawed from an intellectual standpoint, but emotionally I love all the same. I had a copy of the Alan Smithee cut on a dubbed VHS and I watched it constantly in high school. It was such an expansive piece of work, so big in scope and vision, that it fascinated me. The alien

For my money, it's all about "Curling Flower Space." Space Ghost hitting on Sarah Jessica Parker as Zorak is abducted by Boston's guitar UFO is pretty well the definitive SGCTC experience for me.

As someone into both Rush and punk (we do exist!), I approve of this comment.

Depends on which show. I still see some rough crowds sometimes. The best though are when you get the mix of sketchy dudes and vegan grad student types. Always interesting. ;-)

I straight up quit XM because they ditched Fungus. I listened to it constantly and the weekly ska and surf shows were like getting special treats through my radio. I honestly never knew there was so much good surf music until Fungus. To this day I'm hungry for the daily listening experience Fungus gave me. So, you

Don't worry… Lots of Dad's had inexplicable attractions to David Hasselhoff. It's something we all have learned to live with.

Man, I probably hadn't thought about that show in 15 years until I read your post.

I'm not necessarily talking about in aggregate and it does not need to be in aggregate for my comment to stand. What qualifies as "good" television now is of an overall higher quality than "good" television of yesteryear. The bar has been raised. Television, especially cable and VOD services, is much more willing to

Oh, there's definitely less room. That kind of entertainment belongs the "mid -tier" of movies and the mid-tier has nearly evaporated across media, and not just movies (why do you think major record labels rarely back rock bands anymore?). The way money moves around has changed significantly over the last decade. It's

I remember that era of Disney well. Outside their prestige animated movies like Beauty and the Beast, it all seemed like bland family movies from them during the 90's. "Kids overcome ____." Survival in the woods, getting lost in a city, going back in time, whatever… These were the kind of movies that even by ten or

Yeah, I think the writer hit it on the head: Home Improvment was so white bread mediocre that it couldn't pass as kitch. It had the be the middle American idea of kid friendly and thus was never biting a'la Seinfeld and The Simpsons. Conversely, it had to try to at least passably entertain adults and thus it never got

Yep. Hell, alcohol has a worse track record than LSD by orders of magnitude.

Ah. I guess God wasn't as stoked on Sim kludging together a religion as Sim thought he would be.

What's Sim up to these days? Seems like in post-Gamergate nerdom, he'd be a guy who'd attract an audience.

Yeah. I'm a big nerd who rolls with other big nerds into big, nerdy things and I know no one who gives a damn about Spawn, and we're people who even care about stuff like Captain Scarlet. It has to be one of the most dated properties from the 90's and it's been at best met with "meh" since before that decade was even
