I'm going to need a citation on that photo. Wild chimp with mange? Not likely. Shaved off because of skin problems? Something else? Who is this chimp and where is he/she living?

If that's Koko, that gorilla is a female!

All the claims came from the Washington Post story cited at the bottom of the article.

I *love* Nerdy Baby, and have this print next to me in my office right now!

Thanks for that explanation - that makes a lot more sense, both instinctively (as a mother) and scientifically.

Although it does say that the synchronization is of "heart rhythms" rather than beats. 2:1, perhaps?

I'm stumped on one part of this: the average adult's heart rate is 60-70 beats per minute. Infants are more on the order of 120 bpm. So synchronizing heart beats couldn't last more than a beat or so, because of the big difference in HRs. Can someone with access to the full article confirm/refute this?

I'm in the DC area, so it rarely gets colder than 0, thank goodness! Can't imagine running in anything below that - you're awesome!

Awesome!

I read the bride's name as Joyce DeWitt. Three's Company, but 30 is just right!!

A helpful rule of thumb to keep from OVERdressing in the cold is to dress as if it were 20 degrees warmer than the thermometer says it is. After the first mile or two, you'll feel a lot better.

Ha! I really am. But I have visited the chimps at Gombe, and thankfully left poo-free.

Poo-flinging is like pacing in captive bears, great cats and other species, or over preening in captive birds - it is an indicator of disturbed behavior, not normal behavior.

There is a person that I work with that has not only told me that I look tired and that I look like I have a black eye because the circles under my eyes were so dark (my response: "That's just my face, I guess"), but has also asked me if I was pregnant! The latter was after he first said, "Now, I know I'm not supposed

I wish that someone would acknowledge that the poo-flinging behavior we often hear about associated with chimps and monkeys is pretty closely tied with captivity, and not a natural behavior seen in the wild nearly as often. /rant.

Hatfields vs. McCoys aside (!!), it's important to know that double first cousins share as many genes as do full siblings. Truth.

I once asked my genteel southern maternal Grandma what her mother's maiden name was. She replied with her own maiden name. I said, "No, not YOUR maiden name; your mother's maiden name." She looked me straight in the eye and repeated what she had said. I was aghast. She confirmed that not only were her parents cousins,

Human biology protip: Do NOT, repeat, do NOT think about quotes from Raising Arizona when you've just given birth by unplanned c-section. You will laugh, and that will HURT.

Odd that several posts related to Lunch in a Box have started popping up here. I was a regular reader of it several years ago, and all of the references are very old! Biggie, the author, hasn't updated in quite a while. Did you just find it? There are some great resources there...

Thank you for that. It's not really Thanksgiving until I watch every West Wing Thanksgiving episode.
