My first movie night this week was spent with Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle. I am particularly enjoying these later Rohmer stories with protagonists that are actually decent human beings! And I find I like his stories better the smaller they are. This one was very small. One of the adventures was entirely

On Thursday night I finished Eric Rohmer’s series of Comedies and Proverbs with Friend of My Friend. It ended with a sight gag and a laugh and was overall a refreshing light truffle of a movie! It was a nice way to end the series! Almost as if Rohmer realised at the end that he had been neglecting the comedy part of

His movies do seem to be getting warmer as they go on. The protagonists of his first movies were almost all pretty awful people. Pauline didn’t really have any outright villains, even the pervy guy at least wasn’t deluded about himself. But Nights of the Full Moon was very cold. So I’m glad to hear the stories will

Beardy perv doesn’t deserve the elegance of a preposition. Rohmer has served up a lot of characters self-obsessed to the point of obliviousness, and of these, Beardy perv is so far the worst. I loathe him more than the perv from Pauline at the Beach I guess because he gets away with his assault. Not just that he

On Monday I watched Pauline at the Beach, which was a welcome summer story for a cold winter night. I don’t think I’m ever going to tire of Eric Rohmer’s old summer houses with great open windows overlooking overgrown yards, plaster walls bare but for a few photos and prints tacked up here and there. Everywhere

What kind of art teaching will you do? Who will you be teaching? That sounds really exciting!

I’m not an authority on the New Wave, or on Rohmer. But I suppose with Rohmer a sensible place to start would be with his Six Moral Tales. The first two stories are very short but give a fairly good idea of what to expect from the others, and whether its worth your time to continue. Otherwise I’d just suggest picking

This week I continued into my winter with Eric Rohmer with the first two of his Comedies and Proverbs. I have a natural tendency to retreat from good things, to not use them up at once, to save them for later. So watching such great movies as these, two a week, week after week, is a battle against my instincts!

What do you think Mimi Puff’s first words will be? Do you know what your first words were? I don’t know mine. Do you have favourite stories from when you are little that you look forward to reading to Mimi Puff?

There you are! I was hoping you would show up! Yes, Perceval should be much better known. Thankfully it has been rescued from obscurity by Potemkine, the picture quality is amazing!

Claudia, Happy New Year!

I spent my first movie night this week with Perceval le Gallois, which was a great experience! The whole thing has the appearance of a medieval manuscript come to life, but I didn’t find this to be at all distracting after the first few minutes. It was refreshing to be told a medieval story on its own terms with what

Because of the holidays I had time for only one movie night this week. I watched La Marquise d’O... with an assortment of leftover Christmas goodies. A few cookies, not frosted though, those all went almost immediately. Some delicious Lindt chocolates that I recovered from a jumble of wrapping paper. The last of the

Oh no! I totally forgot about the Cheap Toy Roundup! No, I don’t think they did it this year, at least I didn’t see it anywhere. I’m going to go look as soon as I finish typing!

That is one of the few that I have seen before! Not all of it though, just enough on TV years ago to lock itself into the back of my mind. Remembering it had a lot to do with my deciding to pick up this set!

I spent my movie nights this week with the last two of Eric Rohmer’s moral tales. I have nothing to say about them beyond how much I am looking forward now to my movie nights! With these last two extraordinary stories, I can say that Rohmer has joined the very small group of filmmakers who can actually stimulate me!

I’m glad to hear you will be spending Christmas Day with EB before he flies away. Will his family be waiting until the day after for Christmas dinner? Oh wait, I forgot you are a day ahead! EB is going to have TWO Christmases! I wonder if they’ll do anything special on the plane? Is he a good flyer? Will he get bored

That’s too bad you still have a test to dread. They should let you do it now if you want! Will your tutor be someone you know? Will they come to your home? I don’t think ANYONE could teach me Math. I can put all the numbers in order which I figure should be good enough. Personally, I’d have ordered the numbers

That description does sound right to me! I went in prepared to be lectured - which I don’t mind if I believe the lecturer to be someone of intelligence and gentle disposition. But this isn’t what I’ve received! I am enjoying myself very much just spending time with these characters, even when they’re sometimes pretty

It really does! A breakable anything sitting too near the edge of a table adds considerable tension to a scene. In real life too. I’m glad to say the vase in this instance, despite being a precious antique, was a bit unsightly and the two characters invested in the vase had it coming. Also this vase was so thoroughly
