@bobjase: agreed. That's why I think it would have been helpful to at least feed him the clue one word at a time, as Alex speaks it. Even better, he should have to 'listen' to the clue. If the computer cannot interpret the words being read by alex, then this is not a true test of man v. machine.

@Apotheosis: yep. I actually found the episode to be exceedingly annoying because of this, as did my wife. she stated multiple times, "what's the point of this? Of course the computer is faster".

@Farore: I agree with your complaints. But for the game of Jeopardy, I think the buzzing in is the true item that makes this 'demo' an unfair competition. Again, the human contestants know the answers, so the machine is not outsmarting them. It is out-timing them. That's a given (we all know computers have faster

@Hestika: It absolutely has an unfair advantage on the buzzer. Watch the episode again. Both human contestants knew the answers to almost all the questions. They could not buzz fast enough. Watson can buzz in a microsecond after the buzzers are released. humans jump the gun and try to buzz in early, in an attempt

No- it's being fed the text electronically.

I don't disagree. But they shouldn't couch this as a competition. I know it raises awareness of the advances achieved in this area, but this is not a true competition - not even in the way Deep Blue and the chess matches were, at least. Too much of jeopardy as a competition depends on reflexes, and they're not

Ok, I've watched the second episode, and I don't know if I'm experiencing technophobia or what but:

I love mommy.

I don't know if this has been spoiled, but I'd be willing to bet that Watson doesn't pull it off. I don't think it's quite there yet.

@jdale: Yep - that's the big reason for discarding Pluto and the more recent Eris from consideration. Even though these planetoids are round and have moons, they haven't "cleared" the orbit of the Kuiper Belt and the scattered disc / inner Oort cloud, respectively.

From the writers of the bestselling children's classics such as How does a Dinosaur Eat His Food?, comes the new, adults-only How Does A Dinosaur Get His Nut?

Ok...we have a blurb about Tibet, its people and its beauty....a mention that their culture is in jeopardy....and an observation that tibetan fish curry is 'amazing'...and that groupon gets you half off.

It's a spoof of a video resume by some douchebag named Aleksey Vayner. If you look him up, you'll find the story. unfortunately, his classic, ego-driven original video is no longer on youtube.

I was able to get Shazam to ID a backing track on a youtube video that also had voiceover narration, in one try. This was through an earbud held up the iphone's mic (it was a casino vs. japan track, for the record). Soundhound couldn't id it even after 5 tries.

Now playing

Aleksey Vayner (by proxy of Michael Cera) would agree.
