I've purchased every single mac mini that has come out, they just get better. To answer the "this is weird" part....some mac mini users hook this up to a TV, so you don't want ugly cords coming out of the front of the mac mini, it would mess up the dynamic of the entertainment center.

the devices are shipped unlocked to the vendors, sprint..att..etc...then the vendors put their software on it and lock the device. I root mine to remove all of the vendor apps, and it saves on bandwidth, space, battery life. It is still completely stock but i don't have all the other crapware on it.
