She had to return in time to play for her NWSL team. I forget whether or not members of the national team are explicitly required to play in NWSL (I don’t think it’s explicit anyway), but certainly the Federation exerts a hell of a lot more control over women’s careers than it does men’s.

1) It’s not a donation. The US women’s team is a money-maker for the federation and those women are required to play domestically. They earn every fucking cent they’re paid and deserve a hell of a lot more.

Please - they spend barely enough to even call it a professional league. There’s no marketing for it, there’s a built-in assumption that the only people who want to watch are group-ticket buyers for pre-teens, and there’s absolutely no effort to attract casual soccer fans to the games.
