That con lady in Star Trek TNG did the same thing, only she studied the existing myths/religions of a civilization in advance, and portrayed whatever deity it was though holotechnology. Pretty slick. Of course, they could've easily gotten the idea from Dune.

See, I didn't know that, and still don't, in that I assumed up until now that that was unique to Dune. It was my first sci fi book I think. All I read from 4th grad up to middle school was Stephen King and EB White (White actually came in AFTER King, time wise….surprised I'm not more messed up than I am).
