Top fuel has had decades of incremental improvements to the point that the cars cost about $60k a run and a full rebuild costs over $500k. This schools budget is smaller and the car can reliably run close to this time with a charge in between.

Supercapaciters are a BIG breakthrough for things like this. Motor development as well as traction control systems are a big boon as well.

The most direct thing I could see would be traction control programming/development. The computing methods used to modulate the grip levels at each tire and how they talk with each other would be great learning for the future auto developers.
