Calling Tesla Luxury is a stretch. Its a high priced mid market vehicle. The features and performance put it in the luxury market, but the fit and finish, materials used, and some god-awful design concessions make it hard to be seen as an actual luxury model.

The low market has caught up by looks with the higher market. However materials as well as fit and finish really push the luxury segment of say a BMW over a Toyota.

A transmission and programming/management software can go a LONG way to get an engine to stand out over another. Want it a bit sportier feeling, make the engine ramp up a bit faster and lean out later on. Dial in a bit more boost and size the turbo slammer for more low end grunt if the vehicle is heavier.

The SMART won out mostly because it was a new brand and had a fashion about it. Kinda how the first gen Dodge sedans and wagons got nabbed by the rapper set and shoved that into demand.

The absolute benefit of this and the Smart is that you can back into a parallel spot and pull out without ever having to do said parallel parking.
