I think they designed this in order to let you increase drive capacity and not performance. It just happens that using an SSD gives a performance boost as well.

It's only 2x on the PS3. Stand alone players and disc drives for your PC are between 6x and 10x now. So expect the drives in the new Xbox and PS to be at least twice as fast, if not better.
