Yes they are mandatory. I think achievements, if done correctly are good, but they also limit the gameplay experience. These limits do not exist if the game does not have achievements, which overall leads to a better, more pleasurable experience. Here's why I think this.

There actually are. I feel ashamed for not using Google now. I just never heard of using your phone as a trackpad on blogs like Gizmodo or Engadget so I automatically assumed that it somehow skipped peoples imagination.

I'm surprised nobody from the Android community tried yet to turn the phone into a trackpad. It could potentially make that trackpad(which is the laptops main selling point) moot.
