My understanding is the FBI needs Apple to disable the auto-wipe after N attempts to unlock, so the FBI can brute force the PIN. Surely there is something Apple could do such that said “update” is no longer feasible in future iOS versions.

Why can’t Apple simultaneously develop a “key” for the FBI and an iOS update for everyone else that “changes the lock"?
