Stickers have never been a good idea for anything really. And when will used car dealers stop defiling cars with those stick on pin stripes? Those are the worst and totally justify my hatred of stickers.

Exactly. If your battery died you needed the original manufacturers code to get the radio to work. If you bought the car used then aftermarket was the only way to fix the problem. Been there.

I know a guy who owns a repair shop. He freely admits that he adds a surcharge to parts because he has to put in the labor to replace it if it is bad for nothing. It makes sense that no one would take that chance for free. And it is probably worth it for the customer because he won’t pay any more if it happens to him.
His premise was that you should have the willpower, and if you did it does cost you money. The second example you give is a bit more objective than you give it credit for. Because a bad commute will reduce the value of that more expensive car more quickly than normal. The cost to you will be in faster depreciation.
