I wholeheartedly agree. Underworld is the only other book (even more so than White Noise) that can compete with American Pastoral for that title. Underworld is elevated above that because, well, it is a book about life, everything. Not just life in America, despite its American setting.

AP is a monumental novel, perhaps the quintessential American novel of suburban life and modern angst. One of my favorites, even more so because the rest of Roth's work is so insufferable for me. But this one, oh man, such a beautiful book.

RIP. A titan from the days when sports actually mattered.
