I’m confused by this statement. Do you think that people suffering from psychosis are incapable of planning things? That would be bizarre. Plenty of people who commit suicide plan it out very carefully - the method, the place, the time, whether to leave a note, etc. Why would this lady be different?

Why can't it be both? You think a rational, mentally healthy woman would kill her kids because she was jealous/mad at their father? Mentally ill people can absolutely still have motives and thought processes. Those thought processes are going to be screwed up and irrational, though.

But they aren't claiming she had PPD. They're claiming she had postpartum psychosis. Depression vs psychosis seems a pretty big differential.

i see quite the opposite. so often men who commit horrible crimes are automatically assumed to be “mentally ill” — ESPECIALLY when those men are white. same with white women. you and i could both come up with examples, i’m sure.

That’s not how the law works. The insanity is based on whether you knew right from wrong at the time the crime was committed, not your state of mind at trial.

the same reason Andrea Yates went to prison? She later had a retrial and was sentenced to a mental hospital, but she was originally convicted of capital murder and was sentenced to life in prison. She had the same diagnosis as this woman... Not to be snarky, but what would your preferred outcome of this be?

I’m just guessing here, but it seems as if they are saying when she committed the murders, she was suffering from it, but currently she is not suffering from it. Again, just a guess. And if it is as serious as these psychiatrists are saying, I would think a mental health facility would be more appropriate, as well.
