FeedDemon is the best Windows newsreader. Unfortunately, this is why you should just use Google Reader from chrome. FeedDemon is clunky and you can't go through your unread as a list. Bleh
Maybe you could set up boot logging. I think you can hit F8 to get this option during boot.

What ftp client are you using now? I would recommend Filezilla server.
I'd get a cheapo one from Home depot and stock it as you go along. A minimum I would get needle nose pliers, a hammer, a flat head and phillips head screwdriver, a 1$ set of all the micro screwdrivers, and a tape measure. After that, stock on a tool by tool basis
