I mean, I think the idea was very clearly "This beer will remove the word "no" from your vocabulary for the night," but the "raping a woman too drunk to consent" interpretation should have occurred to someone. Also, removing all of your own inhibitions for the night is a pretty terrible idea itself.

Mystique's costume/makeup in the prequel X-Men movies has been APPALLING.

"Regressive" describes people who are anti-progressive. The only people I've seen using it to refer to liberal/leftist/social justice nonsense are anti-PC, anti-social justice regressives themselves, so I don't think it's really a viable phrase.

"regressive liberal sensitivities"

He's even more like that in this one - and it's fantastic.

I WANN DAT ȐOBOT!!!

I don't care about their merchandise. It's meta, whatever; it doesn't distract from the film.

Both Chappie and Elysium were, like, 80% good movies with the remaining 20% being half-baked crap which would have allowed for a great movie if it had been replaced with something with a little more thought put into it.

It works maybe not as an allegory, but as a surrogate. Sci-fi and fantasy can let us grapple with real-world issues in ways that we couldn't if the stories discusses the actual issues themselves.

It's also plunged just as many *into* poverty.

And then consumerism after that.

… wolfndeer, of BDN-commenting fame?

Also, The Left Hand of Darkness is also by Le Guin, and I've heard great things about that, so I'll probably try to get to that, too.

Just finished A Wizard of Earthsea. Apparently there are three more books in the series? I guess I'll be getting to those as well.

I've heard terrible things about this series.

Because there are incredibly few Asian characters anywhere in our culture - either on television, in film, or in books and comics - and this casting took one of the few Asian characters the public would have seen and made her white and took one of the few roles available for Asian or Asian-American actresses and gave

"I'm guessing your standard is "less white people or men is something is automatically better" but I could be wrong."

True, but even with a dedicated space program and the resources of a nation not engaged in full-scale war, it took the USSR two years to get a satellite into orbit, and six years to get a man into space, and the US almost a decade and a half to get a man on the surface of the moon.

I was, in some ways, most offended by the implication that the Nazis were remotely competent enough to have a space program (a secret space program), much less to make it to the moon and build a secret base there. The Third Reich were masters of the Wile E. Coyote weapon: massive, theoretically ingenious, incredible

Fedoras looked great back when everyone wore one. Now they just look silly and out of place.
