It’s sort of a canard to talk about bringing back manufacturing jobs. Doing that won’t do much good, as automated manufacturing is so pervasive and is only going to increase in the future.
I’ve not spoken to a “dey took are jerbs” Trump voter who was anything other than a high school educated white male.
I’m sure the horse industry said the same thing when the car became ubiquitous. Horses are still around. So will be non-autonomous cars. Your fears are not good motivators for conscious thought.
Trump is a demagogue, pure and simple. He says what he thinks you (angry disenfranchised under-employed Rust Belt male) want to hear.
I live in the Baltimore/Washington corridor. My 12 mile commute takes 50 minutes. Its because of bad infrastructure (roads that narrow from 3 to 2 lanes and back to 3, all because someone in 1957 wanted to save a buck), bad drivers, congestion, and the inexplicable and generational desire to have an “office” where…
Or maybe, it is because average people don’t enjoy driving. For most people, nearly all of them spending zero time on Jalopnik, cars are merely utilities that make transportation easier, more-convenient and (in some cases) more cost-effective than biking, walking, riding horses and buggies, or public transport.…
I’m not sure I follow your rationalization. Although there are some parallels, international markets aren’t the same as competing townships.
“We will bring back your auto manufacturing business like you have never ever seen it before,” Trump said.
The problem (for us, anyway) is that displaced workers aren’t being effectively retrained to reenter the American workforce: the guy who used to assemble the widget is not being trained to maintain or program the machine that assembles the widgets, he isn’t being trained to do the things that other countries pay us…
When I was in freshman English, I did a research paper that I called Automation and its Effect on Employment and Productivity.
Meghan Trainor is bad, but I see Florida Georgia Line on that list. That band exists on a whole ‘nother plane of terrible. Bro-country terrible.
I cannot WAIT until the day self driving cars are the norm. Drivers training standards in this country have plummeted to almost nothing, the aging population of the baby boomer generation is only going to get older, technology is an unstoppable distraction, and traffic is a fucking nightmare.
Driving is the only thing…
Right there with you. Driving is a chore. Even when I encounter a “fun” stretch of road, I’m too worried about other idiots to enjoy it. My next motorcycle is going to be a dual sport, and my next “fun” car is going to be for closed courses. For day to day putting around, let the computer take the wheel. I’ll read a…
And when it doesn’t involve fulfilling actual civic duties, like voting, serving on juries, and paying your taxes. Flag lapels are nice; functioning national infrastructure, sorry but I gave at the office.
I’d love one. Driving to and from work is tedious and awful. I’d “dd” an autonomous car M-F, nfp. As long as I didn’t have to babysit it.
Patriotism only counts when it’s done in front of people. Exactly like religion.
How many times do I have to tell you people The Constitution (which is mostly the second amendment plus a whole lot of other useless crap.) only applies to old white men.
This week in “wealthy old white men telling young blacks to know their place” we head to Nebraska . . .
