Dont feel bad, I bought two 290’s back in Feb. Would much rather have bought 390’s or better yet two Fury’s for my 4K panel. Two 290’s actually have better scaling than two 970’s so between the two in a crossfire/sli config, the 290’s are faster than a set of 970’s.

Your numbers were a bit off:

The final 512MB of VRAM on the 970 is useless because of the read and write speeds. There are complaints all over the internet of individuals using more than 3.5GB of VRAM and getting terrible stuttering and slowdown. and regardless, the 390 is faster.

Gran Turismo was still a damn good looking game back then though. Gran Turismo 4 on Ps2 in 1080i looked gorgeous too, but it was a shame you could only do time trials with the resolution like that. I guess too many cars and too many polygons in any other game modes.
