They probably hoped that no one would look too closely at who was getting the funds. After all, the big corporations that took loans from Obama in 2008 mostly got away with it.
Sure - wasn’t intending to imply that it was a straw man, I was implying that it’s funny to accuse people of committing fallacies while committing fallacies in the same breath.
It’s pretty funny that you complain about straw man arguments and then resort to “read a book”. Which books? Always happy to learn.
That’s a nice sentiment, but not practical. You also want to subsidize VHS manufacturers when DVDs get invented? Subsidize taxis when ride sharing becomes popular? Subsidize cable companies when internet streaming disrupts them? It would never end. Better to let people adapt rather than always relying on government…
The fact that something is part of the economy is not a good reason to keep it around. Imagine if we had subsidized blacksmiths with taxpayer money once cars were invented - “Maybe *you* don’t ride horses anymore, but those horseshoes benefit all the people in rural areas who still ride horses!” I think we can all…
I’m still not convinced I should care whether USPS survives. I can’t remember the last time I got a letter I cared about that couldn’t have easily been sent via email. The amount of fuel burned to deliver all that junk mail must be staggering, not to mention how much space it must take up in landfills.
I think the problem with toilet paper is no longer hoarding - it’s the fact that more people are staying home and using more of the home-sized toilet paper rolls. Less people at work/schools/movie theaters/libraries/etc using the industrial-sized rolls (which are very easy to find in my experience, if you want them).
Similar for me. Been throwing ground spices in a coffee grinder until they’re finely powderized (usually chili powder, cumin, salt, and coriander) and then adding a bit of butter or EVOO. The powderized spices stick really well to the popcorn kernels so you don’t end up with a bunch of wasted flavor on the bottom of…
I’m pretty sure I would never say something like “capitalism has lifted millions of people out of poverty” or something like that in the middle of an article about take-out food.
Right? What’s with the random socialist propaganda in the middle of the article?
What a weird law. How does one go about deciding whether charging $3 vs $6 for hand sanitizer is “unconscionable”?
Mine would be:

Wouldn’t that be solved by going to permanent DST?
I’m honestly not sure who is keeping the time switching alive at this point. Seems like everyone I’ve ever talked to hates it.
I dunno what pleasant experiences you’re having with cashiers? Sometimes I get told to have a nice day, or they make a comment that they also really like Quaker Oat Squares or something, but... eh? Could live without it.
I’ve stopped eating sandwiches ever since the plague struck Sandwich, Kent in 1564.
Yeah, same position for us. We decided to put money into paying off the house for psychological reasons - it just would feel really nice to have the house paid off, plus it means that if we both lost our jobs somehow, our day to day expenses would be very low and it wouldn’t be a big deal for us.

Whenever I’m doing long term leisure: “I hate this, I wish I was at home watching tv or playing a video game.”
