I'm definitely getting Skyrim withdrawal - I've spent 485 hours in there - but I think I will wait for the complete edition before I dive back in. Will be nice to have plenty of new stuff.

I'm not keeping my hopes up for standalone DayZ when it comes to smoother combat etc. They'll probably - hopefully - revamp things like inventory management, but I'm not expecting the movement & combat system to be redone, sadly.

It is very hard to get into. You have to know your way around the base game, ARMA2, which in itself is an amazing but clunky simulation. This clunkiness (inventory system, movement, various bugs) translates into the DayZ mod which itself is in buggy alpha stage.

This looks just... boring. I imagine a good hunting game is you creeping through a forest, sneaking up on your big game without getting noticed, scoring that one shot clean kill.

This really is a nice game though. I took the plunge after a previous article mentioned it and... told my friend to get it. He's liking it quite a bit.

In Steam, click on View > Small mode. It's not exactly a different version, but it's a simplified launcher.
