He created his costume, web-shooters and web fluid when he was 15 years old. He was already a talented engineer and they made up some crap that when the spider bit him it imparted the chemical knowledge for how to create web fluid.

I hate this idea too. He is supposed to be a gifted scientific genius the likes of which has impressed Reed Richards, Otto Octavius and Curt Connors. The idea that he cannot create his own web-shooters or synthesize his own webbing is a real slap in the face of the character.
