You lose those rights when you are on probation, as probation is an alternative to being incarcerated. Just like a judge can order her not to drink even though she is over 21, avoiding police contact can be a condition of her probation as well. Basically, being found guilty of a crime strips you of your rights.

My parents were great parents, but I think they may have gone overboard once or twice over shear frustration - it's not right, but it gets a lot worse than this (especially in Russia).
