@Matt da brat on da wheels of steel: The science is sound. The same tech is used to measure o2 saturation in blood via the same probe that measures the pulse. Commonly found in hospitals. No idea if it works on a phone, though, as there is usually an attached red/infrared light source on the hospital version.
