Sure, the near term relative to about now in Star Trek canon is not very nice. Eugenics Wars (90s), World War III, probably plenty of starvation and disease. But you do have to give it to them that the odds of it getting worse before it gets better are probably higher.

I liked that they didn't jump into having ships right away, that they showed them developing them.. first with the fighters onto Prometheus and then Daedalus. I thought the progression was nice.

Agreed. I also found that even though it was a YA book, it was really only YA in the sense that many characters were young. The topics they covered and how they covered them were very adult. There is some intense stuff in that series that would put Twilight to shame.
