Highly recommend Listary. It's a really low-friction way of having checkable lists with you synced between devices. The way it marks a task as "done" is compatible with NValt.

Kaspersky's public relations team haven't slept a full night since Flashback started making the news. You've got to give them credit for taking an opening.

That was my first thought...aren't Apple being called on the carpet in Yankistan right now for much, much less?

He is annoyed at receiving tickets for running red lights. That's what I was talking about. Anyone who needs a reminder to not run a red light should not be driving.

Seconded! Or as the kids say:

Apple doesn't really want you using that space, although they can't decide what space they want you to use. First they liked docklets, then they pushed devs to use the menu bar, now they're saying "wait until notification centre comes out and use that."

Can we just remind Hacker Dave that each of those annoyances represents at least one other human life he's endangered? Can we then take away Hacker Dave's license?

It's actually quite handy on the Mac. I have my mouse's fifth button bound to "Reveal Desktop". Geektool ignores it (sadly bowtie doesn't), so I can quickly see whatever I have output in Geektol with a single click. A second click restores it.

If you use 1Password, you can store your encrypted database in DropBox, and then access it using 1PasswordAnywhere ([help.agilebits.com]) their JS/HTML front end. If you access it using a system you do not trust, you can simply change the passphrase when you're back in front of your home machine.

I started off using Cinch, but switched to Moom. Much more fine grained control, but you can also just quickly snap to half or quarter windows.

I grind in MMORPGs with the brightness turned *way* down. It's fun and engaging enough to keep me from thinking about other things, but not generally so stimulating that it keys me up.

The photo next to "cables" is of a ~20yr old Creek Audio CAS 4040 integrated amp. I have one, bought it used when I was in university. It's a phenomenal amp, I can't recommend it enough if you can find one.

Regarding the Screen Sharing Menulet: you can add VNC bookmarks to the Finder's "Connect to Server" window. Just type vnc://SERVERNAME in the box and hit the plus. Not as featureful, but ideal if you don't want yet another thing hanging out in your menu bar.

I use Joypad ([itunes.apple.com]) for this. You can map d-pad and buttons to any keyboard key you'd like using the client on your Mac or PC. This means that you can also use it with other web apps that have access keys.

Sadly, I don't think of Dreamhost as the cloud. It's where I put my stuff that I want online but not in some "cloud" so I can have control over it.

Before you go to all this trouble, first make sure you need to bother. If your television has a DLNA/UPnP client built in, you may be able to get away with just running a server like PS3mediaserver on your other computers.

Hi, Robbiecda: No, I'm afraid this won't work on Windows, as it's a prepackaged Sheep Shaver distro for Macs only. You could download the package anyway, it'll give you the disk images and other files you need to get started (inluding preinstalled OS9). Once you have those, you can follow these instructions:

The easiest way to get old (pre-OSX) software running is Classic on Intel. Do a search for exactly this: COI (Classic-On-Intel) V4.0.1 "Chubby Bunny". That'll get you Sheep Shaver running an emulated PPC Mac with OS9 right out of the box. Even comes with disc images and automatically shares a local folder.

It's mentioned in the article, but I don't think it's clear enough: no extension is needed, you can just head to [relaxpls.com] for the same effect.
