Just pretend George really drowned and the rest of it in is head, Minority Report style.

IaWL won a special Technical Oscar for its snow effects.

A lot of Jimmy Stewart's "light" performances are actually pretty dark.  One of his first movie roles was as a murderer in a Thin Man movie, and Jefferson Smith clearly has anger management issues.

"Popular" is relative.  It was a Best Picture and Best Actor nominee in 1946.

Yeah, I think what the movie was hinting at is that not only does Sam leave her in the alternative universe, but she's somehow "tainted" by that in a way that prevents her from finding a respectable husband.  (And yet Sam is still a sympathetic character!)  Similar to how Violet becomes a prostitute without George

At the risk of sounding naive … Films like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life work because they promote humanistic values that all Americans agree on.  The fact that such values do exist is something that seems to drop out of the conversation quite a bit these days.

Where's Esperanza Spalding when you need her?

"for some reason" could apply to the clauses both before and after it (though it's clearly meant to be the former)
