I'll have to check out Angelmakerat some point in the future, thanks for the tip.
I love that you love both of those books! That's why I still check in to the AV Club in the first place, nice to know there are kindred spirits out there.
MT Anderson's Feed is what all dystopian YA fiction should be. Love pretty much all his stuff, probably especially the first Octavian Nothing book.
I was thinking the other day that my dumb-ass, theiving, druggie, rap-artiste-wannabe nephew would make an excellent Hiassen villain.
Curious to get your take on Feed.
I'm getting This Is How You Die from the library tomorrow! Good to know you're liking it.
Any or all of these:
Nixonland is badass and gave me a re-education on everything I learned in high school AND made me appreciate the most recent season of Mad Men at the same time.
@avclub-19bbc58b6055b16f0587e4eee8121475:disqus , that's a neat little game to play! The only things coming to mind are sort of from left field, but Wm. Carlos William's Paterson and since there was brief talk about Dos Passos (a couple of weeks back) maybe some of his Manhattan Transfer stuff, but that could just be…
Never heard of this before (or read any Fleming for that matter) but thanks to you I'm going to. Looks like an interesting semi-revisionist take on the war, and it strikes me as a surprising one for an Irish guy from New Jersey.
I haven't timed both of them, but you may be right.
"and force John Cleese to read out what must be the longest character name in the show’s history."
I LOVE Dos Passos - I read something once that described him as the first gonzo journalist, and I think that's pretty accurate. Like @avclub-2376362590199c89caa66cab3c297f05:disqus says, it really helps to be into American History.
Lawrence Wright is awesome. I'm 3/4 of the way through Going Clear, and tore through Remembering Satan a couple of months ago.
Nicely done. Have you been reading George Saunders recently?
Best opening credits to a movie, maybe ever.
Thanks for that @avclub-f3165be83d2dd835403b494eb7185ce2:disqus , you just made my day.
Oh man, good call. I always thought I was the only one who wanted to see them (and I also thought there was something very, very wrong with me for wanting to see them).
Buried deep here, but what the heck: Cards As Weapons by Ricky Jay. I know it's not completely unobtainable, but I don't want to spend $150 on it: http://www.amazon.com/Cards…
