I think that scene is being taken too literally.  He is bound by his condition to be a creature of habit and routine.  Part of that routine is the continued health and presence of his mother.  Failing that he falls to the next routine.  If that doesn't happen he would fall apart.

I actually really liked Max's reaction.  It was pretty real from a kid that has trouble expressing his emotions to fall back on routine.  He's obviously quite affected by it but doesn't know how he should react to it.

I think she may have been upset when someone told her off screen that her mom might be dying of septic shock but maybe kind of maturely brushed that aside to give her mother a hug when she got there.
