I'd say the Shadow ship design is one of those B5 things where it's obvious or hamfisted, the thing so many complain about (it's big evil space spider!) but also works so so well.

The way to tell, for me, if substance abuse/addiction is a lazy plot device if it's, as you say, a "character flaw," or used for its own dramatic sense (poorly), vs a manifestation of other issues in the character's life.

I never thought about how the show might lean on the plot trick of having some figure from a character's past return to cause trouble. Yep, TNT absolutely did meddle with it to the point where JMS gave up. So TNT canceled it before it even aired, that's why they treated it like crap in terms of scheduling it.
