I don't think CDs going away and sound quality are related, though, because lossless digital files sound exactly like the CD, and high bit-rate mp3s sound the same to everyone except those with super-sensitive hearing (and I would wager even they would fail a double-blind test).

I had tons of CDs and records and everything, because I consider myself a music nerd and that's what you do.  But then I realized that I just never had this great love for the physical media thing.  Not knocking it for those who do, but there is this insistence amongst some that they go hand-in-hand (so to speak).

I like to music the same way you do at home but I use digital for that.  Not saying you're wrong of course- we like to do what we like to do.  But I just disagree with this notion that vinyl = "really" listening to music and digital is not.

iTunes or Amazon presumably means you're using the mp3 format.  This format works by using an algorithm which tries to eliminate musical information while compressing the data.
