B5 has the best and worst dialogue I've ever heard.  Yes, the previously mentioned dancing shoes and the broad humor were miserable.  But then there are so many great G'Kar speeches- his closing narration to season 3 still gives me chills.  That big "I would have killed you where you stand" scene with Delenn.  Every

No we shouldn't give credit to B5 just for longer story arcs.  But we should give it credit for multi-year story arcs that were fully outlined.  B5 is unique in that it was designed with specific story and character points to meet throughout its run, including the ending.  This gave the project a coherence that excels

What, DS9 fans that hate B5?  I've met plenty.
Clearly, my social circle is sophisticated and cosmopolitan.

One be a B5 fan who kind of resents DS9 for what does indeed look like a nasty trick of "borrowing" an idea and airing it first but still enjoys it on its own merits.  One like me.  me me me

"Isn't… it… POSSIBLE?!"

The Gathering is a decent story idea executed awkwardly and is mostly poo.  When I push friends into B5 I start by telling them to watch The Gathering while explaining how bad it is.

Cool.  Please watch it and join us there.  I'll be playing the part of eager, annoyingly defensive fanboy.

Excellent point.
Also, Kira is my favorite character in the show, so there's that.

I'd highly recommend checking out the two part TNG episodes that were about Picard being captured by the Cardassians.  The 2nd part has the legendary "there are four lights!" torture sequences.  In addition to it just being great TV, it's a nice set-up for Cardassians.

I love/hate Brooks/Sisko.  His scenery chewing makes Shatner look like a paragon of subtlety.  But I'm a sucker for that stuff, and it's just a lot of fun to do impressions of Sisko.  Especially on a date.

I also hate the Ferengi but do enjoy Quark in small doses.  So I guess the question is- were all the terrible Ferengi episodes in TNG and DS9 worth Quark?

Was there a few years ago, didn't know they shut it down.  My stupid friend tried to awkwardly hit on some Klingon-attired staff member.  Ugh.  And we drank some Robitussen-tasting liquid from some big bowl with dry ice in it.  Such silliness.

If a set or prop or ship or whatever is alien, it seems to give the design crew more license to get creative.  Trek, B5, etc- the alien stuff generally looked way cooler and the human stuff was pretty boring.

Despite its weaknesses in execution, I love the idea of trying to apply a new sci-fi plot concept directly to a character's personal situation.  It's rarely seen in the genre precisely because it's so hard to do.  It's why Solaris is a great read and two boring movies.

(I think I'm supposed to reply to my own post in order to keep this in the right thread… sorry if it's wrong, still getting used to the comment section and I'm new to contributing here)

Anyone else here who simply does not have the patience for these huge box sets?  I'm not talking about collections of albums (Beatles and Dylan mono collections are MUST OWNS), I mean with the demos and bonus and the alternate takes (latter are huge in jazz collections).

My turntable happens to be $500, from the company Pro-Ject.  They are an "audiophile" company but make some nice thing for the value.  Their cheapest one is called the Debut-3 and even comes in some neat colors.  It is $300 and I'm sure you can find a new(ish?) one on ebay or audiogon.com for 250, 200 if you're

Lord I tried and tried to get into his post-Supreme material, back in the days when I was quite the pretentious jazz snob.  His next album after Supreme was called Transition so he was basically telling us "alright everyone, it's about to get crazy."  Squeak squonk squeal, cue headache, I'm out.

Certainly in the heyday of the LP they would take the break between sides into account.  The big impact songs, or the ones they wanted to be hits, were usually placed at the very beginning and end of each side.

I listen to mostly digital but pepper it with some vinyl, but also regularly participate in "audiophile" forums and have listened to and own a bunch of various equipment.
