I think there has to be something more. Rose went to a/the parallel universe, Martha decided to leave, Donna's departure is a matter of life and death. If it's as simple as the Ponds being marooned in another era, surely The Doctor will (eventually) find them? Unless the Ponds do a Martha and refuse.

The Doctor will always be a white English male. This despite the irrelevance of race/gender in The Doctor's characterization. So much as I'd love for Matt Smith to regenerate into Tilda Swinton, color/gender-blind casting only works for bit parts.
